As a follow-up to a previous post on painting with light I just came across this photo of Man Ray

It's not actually a watch, but a leather bracelet. Subtle it isn't

In a previous thread, laurens10 asserted that the world is supported by three turtles.  While I have heard such ramblings before, I'd present here evidence that it is only supported by a single turtle

Comic Flowcharts?

Somewhere in the recent mists of time the "comic flowchart" became a genre all its own.

A brief profile of Jean-Claude Biver the somewhat* insane CEO of Hublot and founder of the modern Blancpain brand.  I'd not even blink if he did start selling cheese and was able to take his cow public with a $100million IPO.

I had dinner with Mr. Biver several years back, when the Hublot Big Bang was new and unproven, and wore his prototype for a while

Table and tableware

I just saw the table today at Design Sponge Online

Seems like the appropriate support for this tableware displayed in the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

Cartier Panther Cub

There may be two constants in advertising, sex and cute.  Cartier seems to have chosen the later, in spades,  for their current website campaign for the Les Must collection.  They've centered it around a panther cub, in honor of one of their product lines.

Strangeness in Religion

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
  • "No, I don't think there's anything wrong with getting breast implants as a Christian."
From an interview with Carrie Prejean in Christianity Today
  • "Christianity isn't a religion, and Islam isn't a religion? What exactly would be a religion? How about vampires and zombies?"
In a post by Jim Getz (PhD Candidate at Brandeis) referring to Pat Robertson's claim, a few days back, that Islam isn't a religion. And this t-shirt, perhaps aimed at a similar audience, proclaiming Christianity "not a religion".
But to end on a happier note, Dr. Platypus provides a thoughtful and well researched piece on modern conceptions of Biblical Inerrancy.

We sail up and down the coast of Somalia waiting to get hijacked by pirates. We encourage you to bring your 'High powered weapons' along on the cruise. If you don't have weapons of your own, you can rent them on the boat.

Take a lovely Somali Cruise they'll even rent you the firepower!

In October Cartier released a new collection(press release) in their top-tier Haute Joaillerie line, Secrets et Merveilles (Secrets and Wonders) at an invitation-only affair in Istanbul.  In their words the collection contains 70 pieces "dedicated to femininity".   The collection centers on the four queens, Peacock Queen, the Diamond Queen, the Pearl Queen and the Snake Queen.  Rather than try and describe the pieces, here are the press photos I've been able to collect.  All are copyright Cartier, 2009, but are listed by the source website.

When you need a watch that can stand up to a firehose, a shotgun and high-explosives, I think someone else can just tell you the time

Breguet 3750

My local dealer had a Breguet 3750 watch, a unusual tourbillon perpetual calendar.  Before it went away, I was able to take a few pictures.

First just the tourbillon in the window
Breguet Tourbillon Balance.jpg

Next we have the QP (perpetual calendar, one which corrects for 30/31 day long months as well as the changeable length of February) part of the dial. On the left is the subdial for the day of the week, and on the right the month subdial. In this subdial, at the top right, there is a small indicator to give the current position in the 4-year leap-year cycle. The day of the month is indicated by the retrograde hand under the hour hand Breguet 3750 top dial.jpg Finally the entire dial Breguet 3750 dial.jpg All these pictures, and more, from my Breguet Album

Yale has put some of it's classes online, both as podcasts and as video in some cases.  I've been listening to some of the lectures by Christine Hayes from Introduction to the Old Testament, and they are quite good.

This was part of the Rado Award winning work, Symbiosis by Jelte van Abbema which included printing an entire alphabet in bacterial culture.  The shapes and colors are due to the growth and death of the culture.

Halloween Bike Ride

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Apparently there is an annual tradition of a costumed bike ride through Cambridge and Somerville, which went past my house this year, giving me a chance to try and photograph the silliness.  Night, speed and sodium vapor lights conspired to cause trouble, but a few turned out acceptably.
